Regina Opondo is Senior Community Principal at Kounkuey Design Initiative (KDI) in Kenya
Regina Opondo mentions that over the past 16 years, the Kibera: Informal Settlement Riverbank Upgrading Project has evolved from a single public space to a network of 11 community-managed spaces, benefitting over 125,000 people.
The project has resulted in the doubling of formal public spaces, accessible sanitation, and over 100 new jobs. Moreover, it contributes to climate resilience and the remediation of about 520 meters of rivers.
Innovative initiatives like Living Data Hubs offer Internet access within a 100-radius of public sites, promoting opportunities for growth. The project has also influenced academia, professional practice, and government projects, including the Urban Public Initiative in Myro Beach, which integrates the Kibera Public Space Project (KPSP) approach into a national project.
In summary, the KPSP has been successful in fostering community development and resulting in far-reaching impacts.
